Cheery Cherry

Do you know that cherry has only a short growing season? In Australia, the peak is usually around Christmas.

Berries are high in nutritional value, and cherry is just one of them. Cherry is full with antioxidants (girls should know that) because of the anthocyanins. In case you don't know, antioxidants protect the cells of the body from the damaging, aging and certain diseases. Besides, cherry also contain vitamin C and fiber.

Anthocyanins is also a natural pain relievers and anti-inflammatories. Natural anti-inflammatories are believed to reduce the risk of many types of cancer.

Melatonin in cherry also helps to regulate sleep cycles and has been sold as a natural sleep aid. Lack of this, there is risk for heart disease and increased cancer rates for night workers.

There is a survey done by giving men whole food supplements containing cherries and other fruits. After 4 weeks, total and LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) levels were significantly lowered, while HDL (good) cholesterol levels were increased. There were no changes in cholesterol levels in control groups.

You can try cherry as a healthy snack while doing work or watching tv. Or, try out some cherry nut cakes, cherry tart, juice or your very own recipe cherry pie. Enjoy your cherries. ^^
